Because Kudu Game Ranch is a private shareholding, we are fortunate to be able to take part in various activities that add to the fun and experience of living on a game farm in Africa. Shareholders can choose to take quiet on their own or to participate in some of the more social events on the farm that bring home the fact that we are part of a privileged community and that sharing experiences is fun! 4X4 driving is exciting and challenging and there are many areas on the farm where your skills can be put to the test.
Mountain biking is a great way to see the farm and there is nothing more rewarding than seeing your youngster bouncing with anticipation as they head off on a ride.
Hiking is another way in which to quietly experience the beauty and diversity of the farm and there are many well demarcated trails as well as an overnight hut.
Arrange with George the groom to have horses ready and waiting for you in the early morning or evening. Surely there is no better way to experience the diversity of game than from the vantage point of a saddle. If a more sedate approach suits you, pack a picnic hamper, load up fishing and fly-fishing rods and head off to the many picnic spots on the rivers and dams for a day of tranquillity and otter spotting.
Just remember though we have a “catch and release” policy so if you want trout for dinner pick some up in Dullstroom! While you are out and about on the farm, whichever is your preferred method of enjoying the outdoors, be aware that Kudu Game Farm is an important Archaeological site and there are many relics and ruins from a bye-gone age.
In Kudu Chronicles there is a regular column highlighting some of the things to look out for and some of the finds that shareholders have made.
HORSE RIDING
Bookings can be made at the office.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
I had found what I was looking for – a steep descent with unknown parameters of risk. Anything could happen! The big challenge had been to corner on the rubbled, grooved sand track leading steeply down from the side of the mountain into the valley below. Like athletics tortoises, the rocks jumped out of the ground. There was sweat in my eyes, suddenly this weird wall of black and white animal fur interposed itself between my fears and my dreams of the ultimate downhill rush.
4X4
Although the over 200 km’s of roads are well maintained, there are areas where the driving is challenging so off-road enthusiasts can test their skills on roads that are only suitable for 4x4 vehicles.
SOCIAL
The regular social meeting place on the farm is the Keg and Kudu. Situated at the swimming pool it is a thatch lapa with large flat screen TV and extensive braai area. An open plan kitchen area provides the platform for you to prepare your bush cuisine while your family and friends enjoy a convivial African atmosphere. Join us for New Years Evening parties or a variety of other social occasions.
RIVER TUBING, SWIMMING AND FISHING
Kudu has 22 km’s of river with numerous rapids, pools and waterfalls for your enjoyment. Try your hand at fly-fishing in the dams and rivers that are plentiful in Yellowfish. There are also numerous Bass, Trout and Kerper in the myriad of dams found in our Wetlands
PICNICS
Some picnic sites situated around the farm have running water, toilet and braai facilities. Otherwise owners are free to relax and have a picnic at any scenic spot they wish and enjoy the tranquility of the African bush in a safe and secure environment.
HIKING
Numerous exciting marked trails of varying lengths and difficulty are laid out such as the Narina and Otter trails. There is an equipped overnight hut available for those who want to spend more than a day on the trail.
